Quintessential Flint Hills, Alma, KS. Stone fences were put up by early settlers. When the government abolished open range, people were paid to put up the fences. The government paid 40 cents a rod (a rod was 16 1/2'). They had to be 4'.5' tall to get the 40 cents. Wow! My imagination tried to capture this stone fence surrounded my prairie grass.
